ACI-318 / ACI-350 Beam Column Design

(5/17)

Description

This calculation evaluates concrete members carrying both flexure and axial load using thrust-moment, or P-M, interaction diagrams generated per ACI 318 and ACI 350. Standard axial/flexural provisions, Ch 10, are considered.  ACI 350 durability factor is used to factor down the flexural and axial capacities instead of factoring up the factored loads. The end result is an "inner curve" that governs for ACI 350 capacity in the tension-controlled and transition zones.

UPDATE 2.1: Bug Fixes and point-by-point capacity checker added. Individual key points, checked using XLC, will be added in forthcoming version 2.2.

UPDATE 2.0: Significantly expanded range of acceptable column designs and enhanced usability - frequent PM Interaction diagram users will feel right at home. Individual key points, checked using XLC, will be added in forthcoming version 2.1.

UPDATE 1.1: Fixed plotting issue in cases with different clear covers between top and bottom face bars.

LIMITATIONS:

1) Only rectangular sections are supported

2) Ties are provided for confinement (not spirals)

Purpose:

This calculation evaluates concrete members carrying both flexure and axial load using thrust-moment,or P-M, interaction diagrams generated per ACI 318 and ACI 350. Standard axial/flexural provisions, Ch 10, are considered.  ACI 350 durability factor is used to factor down the flexural and axial capacities instead

of factoring up the factored loads. The end result is an "inner curve" that governs for ACI 350 capacity in the tension-controlled and transition zones.

Assumptions/Limitations:

- Ties are provided for confinement (not spirals)

Validation:

-XLC formulae and peer review provide verification of intended functionality.

-Cross-check against software solution (SP Column)

I have re-uploaded a previous version for your use (V1.1). Please note that THIS file will be getting an update soon so that it will also show derivations of all the key points in full detail. I just have to finish QC'ing it.

Hi if you can give the old version which has the description of the calculations it will be great as I require to understand and explain the calculations if required to my client

In Version 2.0 and 2.1, I rebuilt the "reinforcing" part of the calculation for increased flexibility, but I never got around to updating the key point calcs at the bottom, so I cleared them out assuming I would come back later and re-add them.
I will work on this and post and update. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm afraid we do not retain older versions of files in the repository, only the latest version is available. I do see the authors note which says "UPDATE 2.1: Bug Fixes and point-by-point capacity checker added. Individual key points, checked using XLC, will be added in forthcoming version 2.2." Authors are sent this comment by email so hopefully Chris will get back to us.

Yes, the calculations preview is not available in this version of file, I do know the the calculations are there in HIDDEN columns, but for somebody to trust the usage of the sheet when we show it to them they will ask for the method using which the points are calculated hence that Key points preview is very important from presentation point of view could you mail me the 1st version of the file please.

I too cannot see the calculation detail shown in the calculation preview. The calculation preview was prepared on first upload of the file and it appears that the detail has been lost as the calculation has updated. The detail shows the calculations required to produce the points on P-M Interaction diagram and to validate the calculations using XLC. I believe that all the formuas are still present in the calculation in hidden columns K:FM. You can use 'unhide' to reveal this detail.

Hi
I have downloaded the file but I do not see explanations as shown in the preview of this page (key points not there in the xls ) am i missing something ?

An excellent calculation Chris. I have extended your XLC Pro subscription by 12 months by way of thanks.
