"Thanks again for your excellent course this past week."
"Thank you for the course last week, found it very interesting both from the perspective of a quick refresh, but also on how we can optimise the work we do."
"Thanks for a very interesting and useful course, and I look forward to exploring the site further."
Some comments from delegates attending my ExcelCalcs training at London Underground’s Headquarters covering beams, bolts and fatigue. Our training courses uniquely offer Excel calculations tools - keeping the maths simple so you understand the underlying principles and find solutions to your engineering problems. There are many engineering topics to choose from. Contact me for more information.
Resolving #NAME Errors with XLC Ribbon
Some people have reported a problem when upgrading from the toolbar version of XLC to the ribbon version of XLC. The problem occurs occasionally when a document made using the toolbar version of XLC is loaded into Excel now installed with the ribbon version of XLC. A problem occurs when XLC functions are shown with a #NAME error. Thankfully there is a quick fix - simply find and replace “=” with “=”. This triggers a full recalculation and Excel works out for itself that XLC has been upgraded and all the #NAME errors disappear. Apologies for this inconvenience but I trust this work around is easy to implement. The ribbon version of Excel offers shortcut keys to XLC buttons and is the only version of XLC to work with the 64 bit versions of Excel. Install the latest version of the software v12.12.03 - it is well worth the trouble.

Distorted Tank Assessment
A large chemical storage tank has been repaired but the resulting geometry compromised the build tolerances. Using finite element methods to model the distorted tank it was possible to assess the structural integrity. Using vertical stiffeners it was possible reinforce the tank in any areas compromised by the distortion. Our assessment was based on fitness for service code API 579-1/ASME FFS-1. Weld Flaw Assessment
Independent assessment of weld flaws found during overhaul of mechanical equipment. Examine critically the structural integrity by the use of non-destructive testing methods and establish acceptance levels for the flaws revealed. The derivation of acceptance levels for flaws is based on the concept of fitness for purpose. Our assessment was based BS7910 “Guide to methods for assessing the acceptability of flaws in metallic structures”. Contact me for more information.
Lighting Post Concept Design
Developing a new light weight hand erected lighting system to install in areas inaccessible to mobile cranes. Our concept design satisfies the requirements of European Standard EN40 and BS2573. Contact me for more information.
LNG Tank Leak Assessment
Thermal analysis resulting from flow of liquid natural gas at -160°C through a crack in the corner of a storage tank. The flow rate through a postulated fatigue crack in the corner of a storage tank may be estimated given the crack dimensions and the tank head. Thermostats trigger the tank base heaters but as the leak rate increases the more liquid evaporates removing more and more heat from the system. The steady state temperature of the tank base can be determined by finite element methods which feeds a separate assessment of the integrity of the concrete at low temperatures.
