Biaxial Stress Assessment.xls

(5/8)

Description

Combination of stresses in a biaxial stress system.
Calculation of principle stresses, maximum shear stress and stress intensity.
Plot Mohr's circle on chart. Mohr's Circle is used to visualize relationships between normal and shear stresses.
Assess against various failure criteria:
Two videos are available above. One describes what a Mohr's cirle is and the other discusses failure criteria and when to apply them.

I noticed that the formulae for angle of principle axis results in a division by zero when stress in x = stress in y direction. This error is now prevented. I also added a worksheet called Biaxial_NoXLC which is just a copy of the sheet with XLC functionality removed.

I noticed that the failure criterion could be incorrect if the minimum principle stress was greater than 0 (in a biaxial stress system there is also a component of stress perpendicular to the plane which is 0 and this could be the minimum principle stress used by the failure criterion). This has been corrected and the calculation is updated to version 1.1
