Description

Reinforcing Bar Development and Splice Lengths per ACI 318-99

"XBRACING.xls" is a MS-Excel spreadsheet workbook for the analysis of vertical bents with tension-only X-bracing. The workbook contains 10 calculation worksheets, one each for bents from 1-story through 10-stories high. The user inputs the story heights, bent width, and lateral loads applied to each story or strut level. The program determines all of the member (segment) forces, as well as the horizontal and vertical reactions at the supports, and the individual story drifts (horizontal deflections).

"Old timers" can certainly remember the days when one drew a sketch of the braced bent and traced the loads/forces down through the braced bent. Well, this does it much faster for you, plus you get a good estimate of the deflections (story drifts) as well. For preliminary designs and estimates this is still much faster than structure modeling using computer software.

All the worksheets are independent and self contained, so that you can move them from one workbook to another. All the worksheets are protected, but not with a password.

Please read the "DOC" worksheet for program details as well as assumptions and limitations.

This repository also contains "REBARS (318-05).xls" which uses ACI 318-05 Code.

It was brought to my attention that if the user input a value for the concrete compressive strength in increments of less than 1.0 ksi, for example 3.5 ksi, the resulting text which was displayed in the heading of the bar development and splice table on page 2 of the "Calc Development" worksheet was messed up.

Alex Tomanovich ... your spreadsheets have saved my engineering life! Wind and seismic loading are especially beyond my capabilities. Thank you. John Riley, SE
